Hello all

I have an old international 454 tractor ,and need to buy a new PTO shaft for it , but I’m confused on which one I need.

What’s the difference between a German and an Italian type

Sorry slightly confused , the pto shaft comes with the piece of machinery that needs it and can be any of the types on the site, all will fit onto the tractors pto spline shaft

thank you for you reply , that's now making more sense , so any pto shaft will fit the tractor end but i need to find out what type of connection the implement has.

i have just purchased a second hand flail mower for my tractor which didn't come with a PTO shaft

sorry if this was a stupid question I am new to using a tractor

Most splined PTO shafts (and the shafts on implements) are standard size 1 and 3/8 inch. Some early tractors like the Fergie T20 had a smaller shaft 1 and 1/8th inch (I think).

You can buy adaptors on ebay (search for 'pto adaptor')

It also needs to be the correct length so that when the implement is lifted it does not fall apart and when it is lowered it does not become locked solid. Usually you adapt the nearest size with a hacksaw!

Most agricultural dealers should sort you out no problem.

Edit PTO shafts are also rated by power based on the HP of the PTO drive so Cat 4 is for more powerful kit than Cat 2.

yes I know about getting the right length of PTO , according to the manual the PTO is 1 and 3/8 inch so i think that's a standard size which should make this easier

Either tell your agri merchant or do some investigation , as many flail mowers can have a slip-clutch or a break bolt in the shaft,so that any jams don't cause the shaft to twist
