To Gloat or Not to Gloat....
« on: May 16, 2008, 07:24:04 pm »
My 3 POL's started laying a few days ago,so today I decided to have a bacon and brie omlette. I choose two eggs from Frank (they're the biggest ones) and each egg was a double-yoker. So I cracked Franks third egg,and that was too!!!

So,is it normal to get so many double-yokers at the start before their hormones settle down,or is Frank going to be my prize layer/breeder?

We have one hen that lays about 1 in 4 of her eggs as double yokers - she is our black naked neck chook and she lays eye watering sized eggs - huge!.  The single yoker eggs that she produces have enormous yokes inside them.

I wonder what is is about her and others that produce these doubles?

RUSS you are bound to know! - you are always the genious at googling and finding the answers to obscure questions.

By the way, love the pics John and Russ.  My daughter Skye saw me looking at the photographs and not realising what I was looking at, said ooow he good looking who is he? Now I am not namings names!!

Morning all anyway!

hello Kate,
as it says in the link , it is a timing thing (if not hereditary) .I read (years ago) that one egg sort of hangs about too long and the next egg is a bit early and , there you go double yolker ! I had one chicken that would lay double shelled eggs too. As time went on with the double yolkers , the amount of times they laid doubles got less and less , so it would seem a timing thing with the ones I had. Google is really handy ....the links explain it far better than I can .....it is really strange though ? as it is normally the obscure things I have done or just know !!!, perhaps I should have been named Jude? nah.....
No names needed (more's the pity !!!). Mind you when I were a lad , the sound of the hovis music....(oh god no! not now please ?) .

Have a nice day  ....(yuk , I hate that saying !!)

Two women knocked on my door this afternoon and asked what kind of bread I ate. When I replied "White",they then proceeded to lecture me for half an hour on the benefits of brown bread....... Bloody Hovis Witnesses!!!

Whilst we're on the subject of adverts,(oh and I remember that ad too,my Mum even went to the place where it was shot, weird parents!) Does anyone remember the two old fellas sat on a bench watching a sunset in the Dales and one saying "golden yolks from golden hens"???

Oh,and Kate,I think I have a photo of you somewhere...... what's it worth?    ;D

Blimey double yolkers at every hit, lucky so & so. Absolutely gloat away!!

I don't ever think I have had one from our collection of hens. Is it more common for one type of poultry than another to lay doubles or is it just ad hoc??

Well done to you

I think you should gloat, I would, we havn't had a double yolker yet but wait with baited breath, we have had a number of very big eggs which we thought would be double but just turned out to have a single huge yolk.

I haven't tried this, but my son who lived in France for a while was told by a French poultry keeper that the way to get double yolks was to throw the hen in the air and the next day like magic a double yolker, it sounds like cruelty to me but I am assured it works.  ???

we find that we get 1 or 2 double yolkers when the girls come back into lay after a rest. They soon settle down and all is normal until the next break. ::)
