Well after a bit of a stormy start my lambing is going much better.
Started with real problems with a prolapsing ewe who finally had twins one of whom died the day after.
Then my hugely pregnant ewe who had triplets last year had twins while I was out while a friend was looking after them. last year she rejected 2 of three. This year she took a hearty dislike to one of them and wouldn't let it anywhere near her. She is also a bit of a mardy pants and tends to be very aggressive to people when she has a lamb and wouldn't let my friend anywhere near here either! She went round to my neighbours who are experienced sheep farmers who thought it was very funny she couldn't cope with one little Castlemilk moorit ewe. They did accept that she was a "bit of a handful and packed a punch for a little un" after she clocked both of them.
I then came home to three new lambs of which she would only let 1 anywhere near her, so the littlest came in, was warmed up and fed and popped in a box. Went back out to find she wouldn't let the other ram lamb near her either and one of my shearlings passing her placenta desperately trying to steal anyone else's lambs!
Bunged the little lamb back with her (explains why the other ewe wouldn't accept it if it wasn't hers!) and was accepted instantly with huge relief by the shearling who was delighted with him. Mardy pants still wasn't taking to her second lamb so decided to try him on the shearling who took him instantly and happily let him feed. So everyone with a mum (even if not their own!).
The following morning came out to find that mardy pants had decided she wanted her lamb back and he was back with her and his sister and she hasn't looked back since!
Shearling ewe is a great mum unless she is more than 5 foot from her lamb when she instantly runs round in panic trying to find him and steal anyone else's lamb but that has settled. Seemed to mean well but just not really know what she was doing!
So at this point I had Prolapse mum, Psycho mum and Teen mum!
We have had 3 further ewes lamb twins now with no fuss at all, great mums and healthy lambs which has been a huge relief so we now have 10 happy lambs from 6 ewes out in the field and we are almost finished. I have one more shearling who is definitely pregnant, 2 i don't think are and 1 I'm really not sure about so fingers crossed sleep beacons (until we get close to kidding!)
Had to firmly kick my OH when I heard him say loudly how we'd managed to get through lambing without having to bottle feed any!!!
Hope peoples lambings are going well.
