I was given a hen last week as she didn't meet the breed standard her owner was looking for but is otherwise OK. She had been given some Baytril before I collected her for a slight wheeze which apparently disappeared after a day or two.
As I have been looking up about chicken infections this afternoon (re: my other post on here today about my rattly hen - not the same chicken) I have seen loads of info about Baytril and that eggs should not be eaten 'for a while' or 'never eaten from a Baytril treated hen ever again'!!
Can anyone advise me about this? I was given the hen by a very knowledgeable keeper and she knew that I was going to eat the eggs but she didn't mention it at all. I don't want to offend her by raising the issue as she was given to me by my Godmother and I don't want to sound ungrateful (or stupid!)
I'm not sure what to do about it. I give lots of eggs to family and friends so dont want to do the wrong thing. And I dont want to eat her either (the hen that is...not my Godmother!) . What do you think?

As a vet, we have to specify withdrawal periods for drugs in farm animals. If not licensed for chickens (most drugs!) then the standard withdrawal period is 7 days. This means that the amount of drug left in eggs after 7 days has not been tested, but is thought to be sufficiently low to not be a problem for people. It is to a certain extent your own risk to eat eggs after this date, but likely to be safe. If eggs are discarded for 7 days then you are doing everything right and no reason you cant give them away or sell them after that point.
