Scam Emails

Anyone get a scam email send it to this email address:  [email protected]  it is linked to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).  They can then look into it.

That's handy I got one from a building society asking me to punch in my details as they were having problems.  Spammed it.  Will dig it out and send it on.

Here's the page on the website of Consumer Direct that tells you about it.

Remember if you get scam or phishing emails from a bank or building society, send them onto that particular bank or building society so they can investigate them and hopefully stop fake websites!

I'm always getting them for Lloyds/TSB and Halifax - so many that I don't bother sending them any more.  Goat no reply from the Banks previously anyway!

Yes but thats because they don't tend to have an auto reply, and they get too many to reply individually. Its still worth doing!

Beth

As much as I agree with the above, one bank replied telling me they got hundreds of these and I didn't need to forward them and another said that i'd emailed it to the wrong department, could I send it to the right department.

Also, my local branch (who are normally excellent) said I should just delete it

So i've stopped bothering.

And we wonder how the banks managed to screw up the economy recently? hmmmmm

Well I used to work in the Online fraud department, and we use those emails that people send in, to find websites that "pretend" to be online banking sites, and we disable those websites, preventing more people losing money. And believe me people have lost money with online banking fraud. Its not pleasent telling an 80 year, no they're not getting their money back.

So how do we find out where to forward the emails to, Beth?  I wouldn't print them and post them(too mean) but I'm quite happy to forward them online.

Some of thes scams can be quite convincing, I fortunatley know our banks would contact us via letter anway, I never even look at anything from the banks BUT, I think I messed up my pay pall account as I did not look at E Mails from that either as many of them are scams, not I have to re set it up!!! We also get booking enquries but they are obviouse, some a bit less, one person wanted to book more than a year ahead for the whole place saying they had ancestors here and other bits about the area that were far too general like " I used to walk past your Hotel and woundered what it was!!" well it was a normal house!!!! ANyway, I would love to catch some of these crooks as I am sure a lot of vulnerable people get worried about all these E Mails........we just still get loads of VIAGRA ones...no need for that :o :o

HMRC issued warnings in January about scam emails trying to get businesses bank details - obviously that is the self assessment deadline month and people would expect HMRC mails/letters

guess you have to be on your guard all the time!

Annie, if you look at the website of whichever bank it is from. So say you get a scam email from Lloyds TSB. Search for Lloyds TSB in google, then go to their genuine website. On their homepage look around for a link, it'll normally be about online security or keeping yourself safe. On Lloyds site its a link called "keep yourself secure". The page will tell you about general security, but somewhere should mention phishing, and there you should an email address to send it to the bank. Again, using Lloyds as an example, there is a section on the security page about online fraud, click the link for phishing, and there it tells you what to do with phishing emails, including their email address to send it to. All banks and building societies should have something similar, and you should be able to find their details. HMRC is the same, I'm sure they have a website address on their site to send HMRC phishing emails too.
