How guilty do I feel!
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:08:05 pm »
We have a stone trough by our workshop, that I think was originally a pigsty.  Anyway, after all the ice melted in the trough there were loads of dead frogs.  I assume they must have drowned, stuck under the ice.  Lesson learnt - always break the ice.  I feel really bad about it - they were our pest catchers and my children's friends. :(

Lady, I take my hat off to you.  With all the stuff that is happening to you, you can still find time to worry about some frogs.  I suppose it is the little things that keep us sane.   PS if they were pretty green ones, "oh no not them"; if they were brown toads - "good riddens" - hate them.  In my defence - from Australia where we have cane toads.  Horrible nasty creatures.  Ros

You must NOT feel guilty.  You should only feel guilty of something if you knew what you were doing.  You had no idea the frogs were there.  I feel sad with you though.

Not your fault - but I'll learn from it and keep the ice broken in future. Hopefully not again this year, though.

Don't feel guilty, as doganjo said, you did not know...we could all feel guilty about things we kill without knowing, I mean, all those poot little fly babies with no mummy or daddy ;) ;)! I fell mad that I broke the ice on my tny pond with a huge garden fork and yes, a hole in it now so poor ducks do not have such high water line!!! silly me!!

Oops Sandy!  Is the hole fixable?  Annie, I feel guilty 'cause I know frogs go in there, but I thought they would be under leaves at this time of year not in the water.  I keep finding sleepy toads when I'm leaf clearing.  I have to say, I'm not loosing sleep over the frogs!

r+lChick, I heard on the radio today that there is a company in Oz wanting to catch the Cane toads to sell to China as apparently they are a delicacy over there.  Mind you every animal on the planet seems to be a delicacy in China, but if it reduces the problem in Australia its a win win situation - except for the toads of course!

The thought of eating Cane toads makes me quiver, mind you, some or maybe even I would find them nice if we ate them!!!! give that one a miss I think!!!!! P.S I started to feel a bit guilty feeding the ducks and chikcens worms and sails but soon got over that!! Bl***Y snails ate my plants so they deserve it, carn'tthink of any reason for the worms though ??? ???

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole - they are poisonious.  They use to fall into the cattle water troughs, die and secrete their poison into the water.  Yes, it killed the cattle when they drank the water.  Horrible creatures, should never have been imported.  If only we could turn back time or a crystal ball would be so handy some times.

I still feel guilty about accidentally eating frog legs in a Chinese Restaurant last year.  I know how they are harvested and find the wanton waste as well as the cruelty involved not to my taste.  (Sorry no pun intended).

I remember as a child seeing a TV programme that showed frogs being prepared.  There was a table with a special knife attached to the table.  The person grabbed the LIVE frog slice off the legs and throw legs into 1 bowl and body into the other.  It was utterly horrific.
