 My pigs have just escaped again because they were being attacked by a husky, good job I didn't get my hands on the owner,
basically the dog had got away from the person walking it,
 i got a call from a woman i see in the mornings walking her dog, and when i got there the dog was attacking the 3 left in the field, the other 3 were following me back to the field when the dog turned on them, it actually jumped on Betty's back and tried to bite her,then it turned on this woman's dog, peter OH managed to catch it, and i told him to put it in my van, as far as i was concerned it was going to the cop shop, the pigs are all in now and ok but quiet and not eating popper, could they  be in shock?

What a shame.
I would think they'll be very quiet as they have had an almighty fright.
Keep an eye on them, they may be quiet for a few days and you may have to watch out for them on the defensive with dogs now!!

People who can't control their dogs make me so angry, I hope these people realise that you would be within your rights to demand it be destroyed. Daisy was attacked by 3 dogs just last week when we were out for our walk, the owner make a pathetic attempt to get them away and when he did he did not even have the decency to appologise, so I came straight home and phoned the police to make a complaint. I have always had dogs and even spent time working in kennels so I am not just some neurotic woman who does not understand dogs. I hope that your pigs are ok.

I hate owners like that, if you dog can't be kept under control don't let it of the lead.. it just gets me soooo annoyed and angry. i could rant on about it for hours, how do they poop a scoop if they are not with there dog etc etc etc...

Technically the dog was on a lead, the person out with it just happened to let go of the lead,
we caught the dog and as I said put it in my van while we sorted the Pigs, ( priority ) the owner came shouting for the dog over the fields and someone sent him to my van where hubby was waiting, I phoned hubby to say get his name and address cos I would hold him responsable for any damage, Hubby didnt of course, But I have my ways of finding these things out, ( I work at a local vets )

What a shame - poor pigs and poor you. Hopefully, they'll be none the worse for their shock. Just as well you weren't running a boar - the dog might have got quite a fright!

I doubt if the police will be interested, from my previous experience. But don't be too hard on the dog owner - accidents do happen and he/she may well be horrified and upset too.

Hi ive been to the pigs this morning they were up before I got there, but I don't see that as a sign they had a restful night,
 usually I have to wake them up in the mornings, lol, anyhow they greeted me as usual, and ate ok, and let me give them a little scratch,
I do have a boar and he gave the dog what for at one point, hes very protective of the others,
I do find though that if they ever get separated from each other they really do panic,
anyhow I'm putting warning signs up today saying there's an electric fence and to keep out and to keep dogs on a lead near livestock,
I know the owner wasn't entirely to blame, but I get the blame when the pigs get out, in fact last time they got out cos a dog chased them I had to pay £70.00 to a lady to get her garden re turfed where they had trampled it,
so if there's any expense I should at least be able to ask the dog owner for compo, shouldn't I ?

thats partly what dog insurance is for,mine covers public liability sort of stuff if my dogs cause damage to someones property ect.

I have heard just recently that there is a new law coming out making owners responsible if their dogs attack other dogs (it might just cover other animals too) I am not sure if its in place yet but when it does come into force it should make a change.

If you have your dog out then it should be kept controlled- god knows there are plently of leads that let them get up to 20-25 feet from you to let them have a little freedom. My 2 cockers love to get off the lead- across my own ground- but I don't allow it out on the public roads we walk along. No matter how well you know them they cannot be trusted. No dog can.

I agree.  Sandy nearly lost Islay last year and until then I'd have said she was 100% proof at coming back when called, but I won't let mine off unless I know they can't get near any roads or into fields with animals.  I know they're OK with other dogs.  It's a great shame I can't find land of my own I could fence off as I had 10 rylocked acres up in Aberdeenshire and that was great.  I keep looking but land in Central Scotland is as rare as hen's teeth.

I hope your pigs are alright. I run my hounds over our fields and back in the Autumn I had the big girls,(Greyhounds, Ibizan and Deerhounds) out. Sitting on my lovely bench at the top of a field, dreaming dreams as you do, I thought my friend had arrived with her black Lab. who was running with the dogs. Looking again I realised it was one of my Berkshire porkers who had nipped under a weak part of the pen and was joining in the fun. The dogs accepted her as one of them but it could have ended in sorrow.

So sorry to hear about your pigs being attacked.  I know dogs attacking livestock is a serious matter, and surely, the police could at least warn the dog owner to keep it under control?

I have had dogs chase my sheep, hens, even swing on the horses tail while the owner stood there watching.  I watch so many people walk through the footpaths in our fields with dogs not on leads, and I am sure they could not get the dog back if it suddenly ran towards the livestock.

I firmly believe any dog found attacking livestock should be taken and destroyed.  They cannot be trusted not to do it again.  I speak from experience here.  Last year, two of my farm dogs disppeared after a fox one night and  did not return.  We searched for a week, and contacted  dog wardens vets local radio etc.  We were contacted by someone who told me that the morning after they went missing, the dogs were seen up on the moor five miles away, among a farmers sheep.  The farmer shot them.  He was very apologetic when I rang, saying he was a dog lover etc.  I told him he did the right thing and I would have done the same.  Those dogs had been here all their lives - 8 years.  Wondered daily through our livestock, they had never given us any cause for concern that this would happen.  But it did......out of their own environment.

So, having been on both sides of dogs attacking livestock, I do see it from both sides, but definitely do not think any dog has the right to be off the lead round livestock.

As a matter of interest are the husky owner and the complaining neighbours involved in any way with each other?  I'm thinking collusion here!

I'd say the dog owner was extremly lucky, not too long ago a farmer shot a young lads dog for sheep worring but was then proved that it was the wrong dog!!! The farmer didnt even apologise.
