On a roll!! Have been thinking of moving
« on: January 07, 2010, 10:28:58 pm »
Been down to look at this place, its just too far for a daily commute for Edinburgh and doesn't give us the dog walks we have here at our door in Aberdour.

May be of use to someone else here, loads of sheds!!

 ;D ;D ;D
This is about a mile from me !
It had been owned by Auchlochan Trust (a big care home concern that expanded into buying just about every spare bit of land in the area) but I believe the bank stepped in after some rumoured fraud and embezzlement on the part of the man appointed to run the trust - ALLEGEDLY, don't want any slander charges brought against me ;)
It's not totally out of commuting distance of Edinburgh (as long as you avoid the M8 carpark and take the back roads) it's less than an hours drive. But then, I LIKE driving  ;D

Its now owned by the Forestry Commission, We were on Wednesday in the lovely snow. we did not get inside the house. I appreciate it is only about an hour away but we sometimes work 11 hour shifts and thats a lot of time if you addd on 2 hours travelling!
It is a bargain though.

Did you see the listing for the fish farm in Penicuik?

Somewhat expensive, but depending on the profitability of the business, it could be a goer for somebody with a smallholding type mentality.

Scattybiker - I know what you mean - I really shouldn't look at estate agent's websites, as it's far too depressing these days. After all, it's all very well to entertain notions of moving to the country for a simpler life. However, if it means committing myself to some horrendously huge mortgage, and 25 years of wage slavery to pay it off, that kinda defeats the purpose for me!!

See the date re planning -

Has it been on the market that long?  If so, £140K is a long long way above it's value.  We bought our croft in 1994 for £80K  - 3 bed 2 public requiring total modernisation, with 22 acres.  I reckon we threw £75K at it, as well as a lot of time and work, and I got £184K when I sold it.

I know what you mean Scattybiker- I often spend time looking at estate agents websites at houses I can't afford.

I just keep dreaming of when I win the lottery- better buy a  ticket eh?!

Oh wow I want that place.... We have been toying with the idea of buying a smallholding for a while ( well I have really, lots of arm twisting going on) Just found out my partner is going to be out of work soon, so it may be a case of moving.
Would love this, lots of buildings, loads of land... ideal    Just off to be really nice to him...

There's another lovely one called Butterhole Farm, in Dumfries and Galloway. It's on with Galbraith's as well, I think.

I keep looking at that estate agents propeties, and showed this farm to my OH.  He was amazed at how cheap it was ......house and a couple of acres are £450,000 plus here.  Even something needing modernsing with quite a few acres will fetch £600,000 plus.  A terraced house with  no land is £200,OOO plus.  People round here struggle to buy anything, and its usually people from outside the area who can afford our prices.

Believe me, we are thinking of doing just that!!!  Just trying to imagine moving my livestock - just the pets are enough - 6 dogs, 20 something farm cats, 3 rabbits, 12 goats, 9 ponies, llama, sheep, .......and all their belongings!!!  My friend has a 7 horse  wagon, as they are horse transporters, so maybe we could do the move in a couple of journeys.

The only thing is finding work - unless we found a very cheap property and could live off the land.  That would be ideal, and suit us fine.  We are not high fliers or big spenders - just simple country folk (or hill billies as the townies round here call us)

When i moved 150 miles South I took 2 cats, 4 dogs, 5 hens and four ducks in my Zafira.  The removal lorry took the furniture etc and the people who bought my house took my duck and chicken shed and some of my dog runs down on a trailer.  My son and I went up for the rest of the runs just before Christmas.  Where there's a will there's a way.
