pigs v lambs
« on: December 14, 2009, 09:18:36 am »
If I want some meat for the table, what is easier to keep with regards consumption of time and being able to leave them to get themselves in in the evening - weaners or lambs?  I am thinking that pigs may be less time consuming.  You feed them in the morning, make sure that they have water and if you like you could have a day out and come back late evening.  Check to see if they are OK and that is it.  If it is lambs, you would have to give them a bottle and put them in at night.  Have I got this right or am I talking out of my you know whatsit?
Will post this on the pig site as well.  Ros  :cat: :chook:

I've kept pigs myself and we kept some sheep when i was younger - but too young to be very involved with their care.
IMHO pigs are better  ;D Great fun to keep, VERY entertaining and lots of meat at the end  :yum:
My feeling with sheep is that they're a bit more involved - plus you've got the worry of fly strike, the thought of all those maggots - yuck  :P
But I could just be totally biased towards piggies  ;) :pig: :pig: :pig:
I'm sure the sheep experts may disagree - good luck whatever you decide  ;D

Don't worry shetlandpaul.  These are very early stages.  It is just so I know which course would be best to go on.  There is a one day course near me about pigs.  I never get any animals without thorough research and looking at the time they need before committing myself.  Thanks for the advice.  Ros

they both have there +/- points its easier to deal with pigs and they are a whole lot friendlier. i would not get lambs that need bottle feeding your just asking for tons of extra work and problems. you can't just feed weaners in the morning and leave them. you need to feed at least twice i prefer 3 times. you need to watch them as they are young animals and like all kids tend to get into trouble easly. lambs with there mum are the easier option once they have got through there first few days. both need working with.

I would say it depends on what suits you best. Personally I would rather get lambs, but thats because I already have the spare milk to feed them, and we will be feeding goat kids anyway, so an extra couple of mouths isn't much more work. Whereas I don't think the shed I have spare could cope with the strength of pigs!

But generally Pigs probably are easiest.
