Badger face Torddu
« on: October 06, 2014, 08:56:35 pm »
Tomorrow we  start a new chapter on our 2 acres by introducing 4 badger face Torddu sheep from the Joseph family who won the champion at Royal Welsh it will be nice to keep a native breed maybe smaller than those Lleyn sheep we had in the past but i think the meat will be yum yum! :fc: oh they are yearling ewes and the fences are upto scratch :excited: also most probably get 2 badger ewes with their lambs in the spring to fatten up

Hints from an experienced keeper - switch their grazing field at regular intervals as they get bored easily.  Split their tags as they prefer putting their heads through sheep fencing to eat the hedge rather than the perfect grass meadow they're standing in.  They love stealing other ewes' lambs if they're within a few hours of lambing - we put ours in a mothering up pen before the lambs are born.  They would probably mother a shoebox if it was put in front of them in the hour after lambing.  They will happily stand up for 24 hours after birth, just in case their lamb might want to suckle.  They eat 40% more hay when in the lambing shed than our Southdowns do so lay in a good stock.  Thye were never meant to be part of our flock but ..... there they are.
