The rehoming centre is based in Balerno Edinburgh and they ask for a donation of £3.50 per hen to help their charity.

If you can help rehome one of these lovely ladies , then please email Fi or Jackie at  [email protected].

Thanks for your posts - most hen rescue charities ask for a donation to cover costs of paying the farmer, transportation (very expensive!) , feed and vets costs especially if they hold them at the rehoming centre before their new owners come to pick them up.

For eg Fresh Start for Hens ask for a minimum donation of £2.50 per hen, the British Hen Welfare Trust asks for a donation and suggests between £3 and £5. The rescue homes also have to pay the farmer between 50p and £1 for each hen and the rescuers have to cover their costs and keep their charities running. So I don't think £3.50 is too much to ask! The volunteers do not get paid for their time and do it because they are dedicated and passionate about what they do.

Unless you guys who paid a £1 or less for your hens pick them up directly from the farms? Would love to know where you get them for that price?

I would prefer more positive comments to the post , as after all we are trying to rescue hens which are inhumanely kept in commercial cages and on there way to slaughter as they are deemed of no commercial use.

Too far to help but good luck.

Yes, we were asked for a donation of £3-£5 per hen by BHWT when my daughter wanted to rehome some ex batts.

Ex free rangers from a local unit are £1 per hen .... advertised in local paper and collected direct from farm.

Think that could be the difference.

Good luck. Like others we regularly get some from bhwt and are happy with giving £5. We are getting some direct in November for £1 each.

I have rescued from BHWT before and gave them £5 per hen without thinking of the cost - to me i was giving the hens a better life and helping defray the costs of the dedicated team who rescued them.
I'd be happy to take 2 or 3 if it would help, but as I'm hoping to  get a couple of marans from bloomer sometime I can't take any more than that.

Perhaps something is worth to you what you pay for it?  Though the commercial value of these girls will be next to nothing, a tenner for three birds is hardly the end of the world. After all, if their new owners won't even value them that much, the cat food factory might be preferable IMHO! So, as long as the charity is properly run (i.e. nobody's on the make), where's the problem?

Good luck with the rescue edandfred - I hope they all find good homes!

I've just sent them a  donation - having 2 or 3 hens, but can take 4th if they are struggling.  Birds were rescued today.  Pick up Edinburgh, Fife, Dunbar and Lanarkshire if anyone else is interested
