Flower bulbs - where to get them from?
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:54:36 am »
I'm thinking about what bulbs to plant for next spring flowers.
I saw someone on here recommend an ebay seller for seeds, and I wonder if there are any recommendations for good quality, reasonably priced bulbs?
Thanks

Keep your eyes out in your local Lidl and Aldi stores.
I've bought their bulbs (and bareroot perennials) before and found them to do very well all at a very good price.

I also use a couple of local family garden centres.

Which? Gardening has a review of the best on-line suppliers this month - for price, quality and customer service (including speed of delivery) - worth a read if you can get hold of a copy.

Wilkinsons stores also have a big range of cheap bulbs & corms . They may get a bit cheaper as Crimbo approaches and they want floor & shelf space for the seasonal tat .

I usually get bulbs from supermarkets or garden centres. However I have been considering buying them from Thompson and Morgan, as they have a lot of different species to choose from. That reminds me I'll have to order some bulbs for next year!

I just did a 60 mile round trip to my local garden centres to buy some little starry crocuses.  I'm too late - no crocuses, plenty of Christmas tat.

Its crazy how the garden centres want rid of everything so early.
I picked up a load of winter bedding all reduced at the start of Oct last year at Block & Quayle - its crazy  :o

We went to the local garden centre 'chain' store at the weekend.
Picked up 3 drumstick primulas, a hosta, heucherella, anemone, gentian, sedum, 30 bare root wallflower all for about £20  :excited:  All good size plants and all reduced because they were either slightly damaged or they are dying back for the winter.  Always visit the reduced plants section

am planning to buy dwarf rose bushes and Lilly dwarf plug plants for the garden next year. Also more tulips and daffs plus iris's too.

Spaldings. Mail order and maybe a little bit more expensive but consider time and fuel and you will probably find it the same. Also you will get quality bulbs/plants.

b&q have always been reliable for daffs.
bluebells never took and they were from a gardening catalogue.

I've bought from these people in the past:
http://www.gee-tee.co.uk/

I find their bulbs are excellent quality, and their prices are very reasonable.

This year we had a glorious display of daffs & narcissi and a lovely stand of deep purple tulips.

Gee-Tee will sell wholesale to anyone - you don't need to be a business to buy from them.

The only problem is that 25kg of daff bulbs takes a lot of planting...
