Hen comb colour
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:13:44 pm »
Hi
One of our ex-batts -now 10 weeks with us  :) - was looking a bit sorry for herself today, just standing around with all feathers fluffed up. I gave her some feed without the others around and she sort of perked up and ate but then went back to being very quiet and not moving around alot. I noticed that her normally red comb has turned a sort of purpley/mauve colour - is this a clue as to what is going on with her? She made it back to the coop for the night, but will keep an eye on her anyway.
Any thoughts would be appreciated - Thanks
Tish

May be a sign of poor circulation and possibly heart problems. I've had the odd one like that and they've all died. Sorry - hope yours does better.

I had a large cock that had breathing difficulties one day, blueish comb the next, and no difficulties at all on the third! Poor thing

I have had quite a few with purple coloured combs, and unfortunately they have died.  I am sure it is heart problems.  But having said that, my pekin cockerel had a very funny looking comb on Sunday.  I thought he was near the end, but, I put him in a hen coop on his own, and he has perked up, and so has his comb.  I think all this wet weather had caused him to get cold and affect his circulation!!

Hopefully yours too will make a recovery.

Thanks for the thoughts - she's still with us but now pretty much disinterested in everything  :( Hopefully she is at least comfortable, fingers are crossed.

Sadly our ex-batt didn't make the end of the day  :'(
The other 8 are still doing really well and its a great kick seeing them rootle around our place - they have the upper hand when it comes to the dogs!
All the best
Tish
