Hi from Carmarthenshire
« on: June 10, 2014, 04:21:22 pm »
Hi all, I have just retired from keeping horses on our smallholding and, in need of something else to fill my time, have sort of mastered machine knitting and from that am now determined to follow the process through from sheared sheep to finished jumper! Hence have bought a spinning wheel in the wool fair in Builth Wells and am about to start a spinning course locally (in Farmers, Carms.).  Which is just as well because I managed to make a right pigs ear out of my first attempts at spinning wool from a neighbours welsh cross fleece. Hopefully, with a lot of practice, i may be able to make something which resembles a yarn of some sort which is good enough to knit on my machine - but I'm not holding my breath!  Nice to meet you all.

 welcome - lots of great advice on here. Especially when you decide to start with :sheep: to grow your own wool.
With 1 Angora and now 6 pygmy goats, Jacob & Icelandic sheep, chooks, a cat and my very own Duracell bunny aka BH !

Welcome to TAS if you have any questions we will try to answer them to the best of our ability. Good luck with the spinning. :knit:

Hi jethound. I am also in Carmarthenshire. I spin, knit, a bit of weaving etc.
I go to a local spinning group at Llansadwrn. If you are round that way one Tuesday afternoon drop in at the Reading Room. We meet from 2-4pm and are very informal.
Happy spinning  :spin:

Hello , also from Carmarthenshire and with similar ambitions! So far I have a spinning wheel, the promise of fleece (sheep to come hopefully by next year) and - Bionic, I will get there at some point (just said goodbye to yet another house guest so currently exhausted and needing to get some work done!)!!

Thanks to all for all the encouraging comments and for making me feel so welcome.  Nice to see there are other spinners and would be spinners in the area.  Once I actually get going on my wheel I will pop into the reading room on Tuesday afternoon and say hello to everyone, thank you Bionic for let me know about it.

I have been given a couple fleeces so no excuses now but to get on with it!

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

What is the lamb like off the Llanwenog sheep? Always interested in rare breeds of sheep. ???

Hi Jethound, from another newbie spinner in Carmarthenshire  :spin:

I go to Carmarthen Spinners on the first Saturday of the month, in the hall behind the Library and they have been great helping me because I didn't have a clue  ;)

As Backinwellies mentioned above, we're having a get together here at our place on 29 June, details in the events section.
