Golden Hoof on lambs
« on: June 06, 2014, 01:53:24 pm »
I've had a touch of foot rot.  Well I haven't but you know what I mean...

I treated the ewes with Golden Hoof (zinc hexahydrate) two weeks agi which seemed to work well.  Their lambs were treated with normal blue foot spray which seems to have a more limited effect.

I know zinc hexahydrate is much less aggressive than copper sulphate but does anyone have any experience of putting lambs (3-4 weeks old) through a zinc hexahydrate foot bath?

Would it be too aggressive for immature feet?

I think I would use antibiotic spray to spot treat the affected lambs.
Never had actual foot rot on lambs that young though!

Are you using the blue spray from the vet or the purple footmaster spray available from agri merchants?  The blue Terramycin spray from your vets should work wonders on foot scald - I would have thought proper foot rot in young lambs very unusual?  If using Terramycin spray to no affect it might be that you are turning them straight back on to wet/muddy ground and that would limit the effectivess of the spary.  If you are able to leave them on hard standing or in overnight that would be of benefit.

Thanks gents.

Yes I should have been more specific - my apologies!

The lambs have had scald, not foot rot like some of the ewes.

And "the blue spray" is indeed Footmaster (from the agri-merchant) not Terramycin from the vet.

Looks like I have a plan.  Thanks for your input.

Is there a vaccine for scald or just for footrot?

My angora goats are very prone to scald and I'm spending far too much time on the problem and not really solving it.

I've been footbathing with golden hoof for scald in both my ewes and lambs and the lambs were two weeks. No problems and works well.

Lime will help too, if you put it down where they congregate.
