Ear tagging
« on: June 09, 2014, 03:09:43 pm »
Hello everyone!

I have a question I cant find the answer to....do lambs need to be tagged before sending off to the abattoir or is it electronic tagging? Bit confused and would greatly appreciate your help please!
Thank you.

I think particularly smaller abbattoirs would be fine with a non-eid slaughter batch tag but a livestock market will definitely require an eid batch tag for fat lambs.

If you don't already have tags and you need to buy some you may as well buy electronic ones.
What country are you in, as the rules differ slightly - you can find the rules for your country here: http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/keeping-animals/registering/sheep-goats/#id

Ask the slaughter house as they may want it even if now actually required. Will be required as from 1st January 2015.

In Scotland, lambs under 12 months destined for slaughter need a single eid tag.

We only buy EID pair tags now as only using one set makes numbering and accountability easier. Any lambs leaving our place are tagged with an EID and non-EID just as if we were keeping them.

As I understand it, if I had only put slaughter tags in and they went to market, if someone wanted to keep breed from them they would have to replace the tags.

As there is very little cost difference I'd rather tag them with two to cover all bases.

Ours (England) just need one tag with flock number to go to abattoir
