niacin/brewers yeast for ducks?
« on: June 01, 2014, 02:06:22 pm »
My ducks seem to have gone off lay again, they'd only just got started. Have gone from 4-5 a day from 10 Aylesbury & Muscovy to 0 or 1 if I'm lucky  ???
I keep them in until midmorning and they get layers pellets in the morning and mixed grain in the afternoon and have access to plenty baths and muddy ground.
Have seen people talking about adding brewers yeast to their feed, anyone else using it and does it help with egg production? There are a couple of drakes in the house with them, purely because we haven't gotten round to dispatching them yet and some of the chickens sleep there but they do lay in there in the mornings.
Any advice  ???

Not tried it but it sounds like you've got everything else in place so you might as well. The only other things I could think would be - when were they last wormed? how old are they?

they've never been wormed but they do get apple cider vinegar in their water.
I spent 20 mins removing all the chickens out of the duck house tonight so they have more space to see if that helps? Not helped by the fact that once upon a time the duck house was a chicken house and some of the older chooks still gravitate to it at night  :-\

Personally I would worm them. A build up of worms can affect laying and whilst apple cider may help their immune system, it won't kill worms. Trouble is it's quite hard to worm at this time of year because they need to exclusively eat the flubenvet treated pellets which is hard when there are so many other goodies around. There are direct dose wormers but not approved for poultry and you have to dose each bird individually for a couple of days which is painful.

I'll see how they get on with having more space/privacy etc first but if that doesn't help I could put the flubenvet in their food and feed them in the house before I let them out in the morning.
Thanks HesterF
