With my Marans I get about 1 in 5 eggs comes out as a hen taking into account none hatchings
My cream legbars are doing so well 13 girls 5 boys kerching  :excited:
3 more eggs are progressing looks like we have lost 2 along the way & 1 never got started.

How many girls to boys do you all get from your breeds ?

I start all the eggs off under broodies then swap them over into the incubator, next lot will go in Thursday /Friday once these are done and its all been cleaned.
We put the chicks back with a broodie at about 2-4 days the last lot 9 went with 1 broodie the other 9 the broodies didn't take to them so they go out in the day back in at night, their 2 weeks old now we kept them under the lamp for ages about 10 days they are bigger than the broodie 9

This next lot 21 probably, we were thinking turn them out as 7's but we only have 2 broodies,
How many chicks can a broodie look after ?
We have a speckled sussex & a hybrid broodie sitting, so quite big birds.

with the Scots Greys its always been a precise 50:50 split. I have just put in my largest batch of eggs yet so will tell you in 3/4 weeks if it remains a 50:50 :)

Traditionally a dozen eggs. I had a marrans hen sit and hatch 15, but I consider this a risk.
Chicks, considerably more than 12, had light Sussex last year with 18 I think (would have to check old thread as may have been 17) but she could have coped with more.

My first duckling hatch yielded 4 drakes and 1 duck  :gloomy: bad times.

The Maran x hybrid/Light Sussex chicks that hatched 2 weeks ago I think are 8 hens to 2 roosters according to their wings at 1 day old  :fc:

Just about to set a batch of white Campbell duck eggs tomorrow so will let you know in a month! And set a broody hen with a dozen mixed eggs like the recent hatch above on Saturday... so fingers crossed for more girls!

Flippin heck maran shells are so hard I reckon only the strongest get out and that's why we get more boys, I can't mix them as I'm getting paid for laying quality

I thought the Maran might be a good breed to put to my hybrid hens given they are a good laying and meat breed. The chicks seem quite hardy, growing well. Out of 12 eggs that went into lockdown 3 days before 10 hatched :)
