Perslane
« on: May 11, 2014, 08:59:26 am »
We ate out last night and I had this 'strange' salad veg on my starter. It was quite nice so I asked what it was and apparently it's Purslane.
I had never heard of it before but just looked it up on Google and it seems that, in the US especially, it's thought of as a weed.
Anyone grow it here for eating?

I have just received a packet from Suttons.

They have a James Wong collection of strange Veg including Cucumelons and Callaloo ( called Caribean Spinach)

More Veg ( www.moreveg.co.uk ) have several options for Purslane. I have just received an order for three types.
They sell in small quantities so are good for trying things.
I have bought quite a lot from them and recommend highly for customer service and quality of seed.

Good luck!

I'm growing Claytonia a.k.a. "Miners Lettuce' or 'Winter Purslane'
You can get it from lots of places, but I got it from here

someone gave me cucuamelon seeds.. I passed them on to my sister 'cos I wanted to save greenhouse space for bigger melons and she if way further south for outdoor squashes.

Callaloo I don't call strange - I used to go to Jamaica regularly. You can buy it canned in Tescos too but making a really nice callaloo dish myself has defeated me. Even in jamaica there were only a couple of roadside shacks where the spicey callaloo dish was really really nice even though it should be as simple as adding onion and a dash of hot spice.
