Fleas?
« on: April 29, 2014, 09:27:20 am »
Having injected the pigs (now 12 weeks old) with wormer to get rid of the lice a couple of weeks ago I have just had a good look at them and they are both infested with what look like fleas.  These are about 1-2mm long, black with wings and are very well attached to the skin.  When I brush them off it is clear that they are blood sucking and they are all over the pigs so I am going to end up with pigs that look like pinchushions.  It makes me itch scratches just thinking about them.

Last year we didn't have any problems like this with our weaners so this is all very new to me.  Can anyone suggest what they are and what I need to do now?  Will I have to burn all their bedding again?  Would it be better to move them to another part of the field altogether.  Will the things be in the wooden pig sty?

All advice gratefully received!

Sounds more like midges or another biting fly than fleas, fleas don't have wings.

They definitely have wings and are definitely biting.  Any idea on how to get rid of them?

Uh?  very strange

If they are that bad, I'd get the vet in to a) identify and b) treat

whereabouts are you ?

can you kill and photo one against a white background?
