[Nethermoor Pigs]

My pigs have red/black crusty bits around their eyes which don't look too healthy.  What do you reckon?

Hiya,
Am I right in thinking these pigs also have sticky ears ?

Were they wormed before you got them ?
If not, giving them a quick jab would be my first suggestion.

Had they been living inside or outside?
Ours sometimes get a bit grubby looking during the winter when they're inside, but a couple of days outside (or a quick wash with some tea tree or baby shampoo if you're impatient  ) usually sees them looking much better

Thanks - yes they are the sticky ear syndromed subjects.
Living outside but very wary of electric fence so don't come out much.
Have just been wormed 1 week ago before they came.
I will try washing them.

Bit concerned about the apparent ill health of these pigs  
Are these your first pigs?
What kind of bedding have you got, is it good fresh clean straw? Old musty foisty straw or hay is unsuitable and may cause the probs you're incurring, also you say they don't come out much becoz of the lec fence, how close is it? they need room to come out do their business and have a run round. Constant access to drinking water, refreshed at least once a day (my pigs love new water & love helping when i refill)
Only ask the above to try to get to the route of your probs and help if can.

So am I!  I have had 2 berkshires before and never had problems.  The straw is nearly a year old now.  The fence is about 2.5/3 metres from the door.  They are coming out a lot more now and the neighbours said they reckoned they had seen them out a lot so maybe it was that i was just visiting at the wrong times!  They are drinking plenty of water.  Hope this helps you identify the problem!   Other than the crustiness they are fine and a lot more friendly than my first two.  However, they don't seem to like fruit and veg, only bread, very much unlike the last ones!

If these are weaners then bread and vegetables are not their ideal feed.  They need protein to grow a frame.

Thanks for your answers Nethermoor, it really does help now we know its nothing to do with their environment, you wouldn't believe how many times we get questions asked and there is a simple solution due to conditions. yours appear to be more than adequately looked after so well done you, I am suspecting its possibly hayfever or a cold of some sort, pigs can and do get human illnesses, do they have runny nose too?

I will check now.  I may try (for the first time) to see if i can upload a picture to show the crustiness.  One of them now takes well to fruit and veg but the other is still not so keen.  Is a year old too old for straw?

by crustiness - do you mean the little dewdrop/tear stain under their eyes? if so ours had that sometimes
actually crusty eyelids isnt normal unless they have had a facefull of muddy wallow.

Thanks for all your help.  We gave them a good clean down with warm water yesterday and they loved it, now look fine.
