A little worried.....
« on: March 01, 2014, 09:48:45 pm »
Hi All,
Had a new born this afternoon one of Two... little and soaking very cold here so once mum had bonded well gave her a little rub with a towel.
After i went to use iodine on her unbilical cord but was no where to be seen :(... im worried i may have knocked it off with towel  :-\.... sprayed the area just a bit concerned of hernia ? or other complications....
It may be it just broke very close at birth ..we have had a few lambs before but wanted some confidence all is ok ?
Plwease..
Thanks Wayne

Fallen off?
Shrivelled up?
Chewed off by mum?

Don't worry it should be fine

Sometimes they do break very close to the skin. As long as there's no hernia at the site, don't worry but don't forget to apply iodine.

Ours seem to vary a lot. Some have cord almost touching the floor, whilst others hardly anything to see.

I was a bit concerned about it the first year we lambed but they all seem to do okay. We just spray in the area of the cord ... even if there isn't much of a cord visible.

Some of our ewes lick very vigorously .... think they might lick/chew it off!

I use a small, wide-necked plastic bottle with 10% iodine - that way I can put the whole cord in the bottle and simply upend it against the lamb's belly.  Sprays go everywhere except where you want them!
