Hi Folks,
We've got an eight month old billy kid (castrated - off for meat soon) who was disbudded at four days old but grew a little stumpy right horn. Well, today I got home to find he'd lost it at some point during the day. There was a fair amount of blood, but my wife (who is a doctor) cleaned him up and there's just a small wound at the base of the horn. I've separated him off from the others and given a good spray of purple spray and he seems lively enough in himself.He did start bleeding again a little after we cleaned it so I'll keep checking now to make sure it dries up again. He pulled away from me and ran back to the stables on his own after the clean up so I'm not desperately worried but just want to check if there's anything else I could do for him.

on odd occasions had black welsh mountain ram lambs loose horns, it just seem to grow a hard shell again after a while.  Lot of blood at first then nothing.  Must be part of natures plan

It should be fine. Just check on him to make sure the bleeding stops and leave along. If bleeding doesn't stop you potentially might have to take him to the vet for them to cauterise it, but that is really unlikely. You can also cornflour to put on it as it hardens and tends to clot up any bleeding.

If there's an arterial bleed then find the torn vessel and squeeze with your fingers for a good 5 mins. You can then bandage for a 'pirate' look with a stretchy bandage.   If it's less fierce you can try clean cobwebs, or some of that blood stopper meshy stuff doctors and dentists can usually lay their hands on.
Were it summer you would need to prevent fly strike.

It doesn't sound so bad at all so what you are doing is fine.

we have had the same with a badly dehorned gg, who grew a thin curly horn. she lost both at different times, lots of blood. but healed well. we used wound powder i think. we rehomed her a tear later but it never grew back before she left.

I've had goats lose their tiny bits of horn. They've never seemed bothered. It sounds like you're doing the right thing.

Quick update. Bleeding has stopped and he's eaten some dinner. Still lively enough - jumped out over the bottom half of a stable door when I went to check on him. Thanks for advice and when I find the horn n the daylight tomorrow I'l put in in the manger for the horn fairy!

When our border collie was a pup and her milk teeth fell out, our kiddies put them under her dog bed and amazingly a little dog biscuit appeared.


Sorry, that's digressing isn't it, it's annoying when people do that

If its any consolation, all of our disbudded goats have grown scurs which they've then gone on to lose. Usually from butting one another or a tree or something, amount of blood varies but it has always cleared up no problem.
Iv'e found that by the age of 2 or 2and a half, the scurs seem to stop growing

Hiya, I use powdered Rosemary as a wound dressing with great effect! It acts as an analgesic and forms a fabulous dry scab!! Any seepage, nd  just a dusting more powder. It has healed some awful wounds quickly and painlessly. Also give him some garlic for his immune system.
Beware the red licks though....one of my boys had a rough time nd was just getting him right, looked out the window nd his head was all red!! Rushed out with herbs to discover he'd been scratching his head!!
