I've been offered 2 kune kune sows that have been in with a large white boar? Does anyone have any experience with a kune kune in pig too a larger boar? What were the piglets like?

It's always been my big breed sows in pig to a Kunekune boar we've done here and not the other way round, but providing they've farrowed before I doubt you'll have any problems in that respect.
The piglets are likely to grow a bit quicker than pure Kunekune but without needing as much feeding- our KK x OSB's got around 2lb of food per day, plenty of grazing and was 85kg at approx 8 months.
I find the piglets are a little more skittish and not as friendly as pure Kunekunes, but the more time you spend with them the quicker they come round to the thought of a belly rub

If you're worried about potential farrowing problems because of the difference in size between the sire and dam, don't. The sow determines the size of the piglets at birth, not the boar. However, it's likely that the piglets may eventually end up bigger than pure-bred piglets from that sow would.


Fortunately, it's not like with sheep, where big heads and shoulders inherited from large sire rams cause lambing difficulties.


However, I would question the wisdom of the seller putting a LW to KKs - not least because a mature LW would be a fair old weight for a KK to support on her back (unless this one was particularly small or very young).


From a meat point of view, the LW x KK should be a good combination - but I wouldn't recommend repeating the same experiment with a large boar and smaller sows.

I've decided too leave it people who put kune kune sows in pig too a large white don't have a clue clearly lol! And there 2 now and would be there first litter

I agree, if it was a mature boar it's pretty irresponsible of the breeder. But, I know a man who had a young LW boar (porker) who happened to get in with his KK sows before his final journey. The result was a nice litter, great for hog roasts
