Reading another post ::)
It reminded me of all those old cures our parents and grandparents subjected us to as kids...

You know, we may just need them in the future - so why not share them, good, bad, and downright
discusting ones  ;D ;D

Here Goes:

To cure a sore throat - safety pin a sweaty sock around your neck.

After mum doing this to me with dads sock once - I never ever got another sore throat - it works that well ;D
Certainy fell asleep quicker too with all those nauseaus gassess  ;D ;D ;D

I remember the goose grease for your chest, although we only ever had a goose once ;D ;D, I remember the burners for whoping cough or soar throats, not sure what they were called either, a cross between, Fry's balsam, Eucalyptus, Vic and camphor, cause the good old chicken soup, and honey and lemon are still going strong!!

Does anyone remember a nasty substance called yellow baselackin? - I think the spelling is wrong, but I had an old lady living next to me many years ago who said she was descended from gypsies and they used it for everything, I just remember having yellow sticky stuff plastered on everything I did to myself, whether it was a bruise or a cut!!

I had an ex with the same complaint, though he felt it was cured better with whiskey - must be something to do with the alcohol content ::)

My Grandmother had loads of remedies, some pleasant ! others not so  :o I have some of her old vet books which have some very strange equine cure's - most involving a dose of lead (to the head)  :o

Cold cure (for humans) - Elderberry Rob (sp?) Boil up elderberries with local honey, strain into bottles. Mixed with a tot of brandy certainly helps colds and sore throats  ;D

Warts  :( - rub with a small piece of raw meat for three morning before getting out of bed, on the third day bury in the garden (must be on a full moon). By the time the meat has rotted the wart will be gone  :o

My mother used to make us a hot todie (spelt wrong I think ) made up from a drop of whisky, honey and hot water. We were given this for a bad cold and sore throat. Still take it to this day but add more whisky  ;D she was always rubbing our chest with warm vic again for a cold or steaming us with the stuff added to hot water. rubbing nettle stings with a docken leaf  :)

Here's one that I still use: For a sore throat; put a spoon full of apple cider vinegar in a half cup of water and gargle, then swallow. It will take the soreness away very quickly. And apple cider vinegar is so good for you anyway, we normally drink a spoon full each day.

I used to get a lump of butter rolled in sugar to suck if I had a tickly cough. No wonder I have fillings.

My Mum did the lump of butter in sugar thing too - much better than dads =sock ;D ;D ;D

We had Indian Brandee for Stomach upsets, and I had to have a spoon full of this awful sticky
stuff every morning because I was too thin and it was supposed to build you up. I cannot
remember what it was but it was like black treacle in a funny jar.

The other thing daddy used to make me do was drink the cabbage water that the cabbage had been
boiled in - he swore it made you big and strong.

Was it malt - the black sticky stuff? My Dad used to get malt - God knows what it is - and we had a spoonful every morning. It was disgusting. He used to ive it to the dog too, but she liked it.

Mum used to give me Minadex vitamin syrup. More dental caries!

We used to gt malt extract - Virol.  I absolutely loved it then but I have serious beliefs that it caused my sister and I to become overweight and never be able to lose that extra fat.  It's either that or the two kids we both had.  Or maybe our family genes  - mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother were all overweight too! Hmmm................
