Hello from Wiltshire
« on: January 13, 2014, 10:38:07 am »
Hello!

My parents are commercial farmers in the south of Wiltshire.  The farm is mostly arable but they have always kept some animals which I have helped look after since I was very small.  Recently I've been trying to take responsibility for the sheep and poultry as I now live in a cottage very close to farm with my fiancé.  I work full time in conservation, but hope to make a modest amount from the animals in the future so I can work part time and be a part time smallholder/farmer. I am very lucky to be able to use some of my parents land and have their practical support.  My mother in particular does a lot of the day to day care of the animals while I am at work at the moment.

I currently have a small flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep which I hope to expand.  I have also experimented with keeping turkeys and geese as meat birds this year and have other 'pet' poultry which includes Pilgrim geese, Pekin bantams and two peacocks.

I'm female, in my late 20s and did a degree in Animal Management but still have sooo much to learn about animals!

Did you do your animal management at Lackham?  ... if so what years?
Linda

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

Let go of who you are and become who you are meant to be.

Hello from another Pekin keeper in soggy Carmarthenshire (the sun only made an appearance till lunchtime!). I used to be involved in (voluntary) conservation education, something I'm still very passionate about. Looks like we'll be adding geese to our other fowl this year, so look forward to maybe hearing more about yours. Got any good photos of the Wiltshire horn sheep? I love them and have long wanted to draw one (along with other rare breed farm animals)...
