« on: December 23, 2013, 07:36:51 am »
Been offered a few off these price is good there 15 weeks old and seem a good size I know the joints won't be huge but I'm sure flavour will be great. Has anyone had these breeds crossed before?

Karen (happyhippy) has bred and reared them before - she has an OSB sow and a KK boar.If she's not on soon, I'm sure she won't mind if you PM her. I'm pretty certain that she found them to be a good cross.

Be aware that if these animals were to be sold in a cattle market, they would go for next to nothing, so please don't go paying over the odds for them. :fc:

Also remember that if breeders can't get a fair price, they won't breed again, so no more weaners  :)

It also depends upon why as an individual you buy and fatten up weaners. :pig:

We've raised 2 litters of OSB x KK (the first one was a 'happy accident', the second deliberate because the first lot were great  ;D)
DON'T feed big pig rations, they'll get really fat! We found that 1-1.5 lbs each per day and plenty of grazing did them fine (hay to suppliment through the winter is probably a good idea) and they were slaughter size at approx. 9 months old. They ate like Kunekunes and grew almost as fast as big pigs, quite skittish compared to pure KK, but we didn't tend to over indulge them with belly rubs  ;)
We had a butcher friend (also a smallholder) visit and he was really impressed with how the pigs looked in the field, said they looked like a good carcass and was quite surprised when we told him the breeding

So I'd say go for it, you'll not be disappointed, just don't over feed  ;)
Karen

Twenty quid each is a very good price. Snap their hands off.

Bought the 3 just had them dropped off one is the runt off the litter mind....but they all seem like good little pigs I've been told to keep them on strict rations as they gain fat very quick

What a good idea! I really like both breeds and to have a combination of the two would suit me down to the ground. Are there any breeders in the West Country?

Not sure where you mean in the West Country, we are near Truro. Looks like we have an imminent litter.
