« on: August 22, 2009, 09:03:26 am »
Morning everyone. I have been looking into the best product for worming a friend has  mentioned Panacur 1.5% on a weekly basis is this a normal dosage (weekly). I would be grateful for any advice on this matter.
Thanks

Gavo will be best to advise you on Panacur in feed worming, but it's certainly not weekly!! As I recall it's once every six months at three day intervals for nine days i.e 3 doses. We use Noromectin, it's a subcutaneous injection by pig weight, and a bit of an all rounder. Personally I find it easier, and we give the injection when the pigs are feeding.

Definitely DO NOT worm weekly  Not only will you damage the pig the panacur residue will get into the soil and damage it.  Cant find the article now but was a very interesting one on wormers v. soil.  I got told off for worming 3 monthly by my vet.

You do need a system for worming but having said that, I wouldn't recommend the routine medication of any animal.
I'm a firm believer of ''if its not broken, don't fix it' Creatures having worms is a perfectly natural state of afairs. So your chickens have a few worms in their system, so what ? IMO,  unless the burden is at a stage  where you feel that the animals health maybe being affected, then I wouldn't worry.

To my mind, there's a big difference between keeping on top of the situation and routinely scourging the animals system. You do need to give wormer to pigs from time to time but you must remember that wormer is basically a poison. Its also good practice to rotate the wormers that you use.

I agree with OTG. The impact of wormer residues on wildlife is reckoned to be significant.

I use a herbal wormer - VERM X for sheep and poultry. Don't know if it's available for pigs, though.
