Perhaps it was the accumulated effect of creosote fumes or skin contact KC. It did sound like poisoning of some type.

Pleased to hear there is an improvement HesterF.

Reader.... she carked it....

 >:(

Came home last night and she was dead in the cage.

Well, she didn't suffer.  I did everything I could.

Oh, and the fox got one as well..... time for them to stay in the coop in winter and only go out at weekends.  I am home too late for them to be safe now.

sad to hear that- chickens can be a bugger to put right- and we always try to put it right and attend to the basics like worming, watching out for them getting egg bound etc. Last year we managed to lose 4 for no obvious reason other than they died on us. this year all are present, correct and fighting fit and not lost one since last Christmas morning- i'm sure there's more to it but sometimes it just seems that chickens die regardless of what we do and sometime they don't

So sorry - after she'd fought so hard too  :(. Keep the others safe and well and hopefully they'll make it through the winter. I did tempt fate as I popped into the vets for deflea stuff for the cats this morning as I thought it was ages since I'd been in when this time last year I was a weekly visitor. I reckon winter time is tough on them.
