How much do you sell your pork for?
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:00:59 pm »
Just doing my sums for when my three GOS boars go off on 8th Sept.  My first time, so all very new.

What price do you sell your pork for?

This is not a fudge, (honest) but it depends so much on how and where your market it.

My neighbour has just put a sign on her gate advertising free range half a pig at £3 per kg delivered ready for your freezer if thats any help.  She also sells her Aberdeen Angus free range beef this way, and seems very busy, as I see her delivering all round the local area, so her adverts on the gate must work ....although its up a remote country lane!!

Over the Gate.....I thought that might well be the answer when I first posted  :)

Roxy...That's a great idea about the sign on the gate.  Fortunately I think all the meat this time is spoken for, but for the future I may well try that.  Even though it is a very quiet lane here too, it's a way of getting the word around that I have pork.

All depends on how much it costs you to raise, slaughter and cut. + the cost of buying weaners fuel etc.

You also have to consider what margin you are willing to accept, dont sell yourself short and sell to cheap in contrast dont be gready add up your costs and try to price fairly.

Theres a huge difference in price with pork, yours no doubt will high quality rare breed which demands a premium.

We charged £2.60 per lb last year - we're still imperial here!

Finest pork chops in Tesco are £6.99 per kilo.

Boned out joints at 8 euros per kilo, bacon and gammon 12 euros per kilo.  We need to cover our extortionate cotisations (nhs stamp but much more expensive).

Many thanks everyone.

Had a look around at the 'finest' and 'taste the difference' type ranges in the supermarkets in this area and decided on £7.50 a kilo for joints, chops etc and £5 a kilo for sausages.

Hasn't put anyone off yet, so I'll see how it goes.

When you look at the prices in the supermarket they are really expensive, and I know I would certainly buy yours rather than whats on the shop shelf!!!  I know most people would feel the same, so you will definitely sell your pork and sausages whatever price you settle on.

Thank you Roxy.

Everyone I've spoken to so far has said yes and put in an order, so I think I may have the prices OK.

Really looking forward to tasting some myself.

This is always such a tricky subject and it's good to see most people are charging a sensible price for their pork. It's very important to remember that most of us produce a premium product. Our pork is always better than the supermarkets and very often better than the high street butcher. We have no trouble finding buyers at £2.70/lb for half a pig and considerably more for the good cuts. Even so, our profits are extremely small.

Don't be frightened to tell people how good the product is and charge them accordingly - I bet they won't be disappointed.
