I bought a leather hat as you describe Bloomer. It was from an agricultural show from a stall selling hats made by 'The Australian Bush Hat Co.' (label inside says 'International Hat Co.'). Needed a lot of leather treatment to get it waterproof but was only £20. Has some loops inside so you could fit a neck string. But mine is a snug fit and hasn't blown off yet. Worth spending a lot of time trying them for fit. The salesman said they do shrink slightly when they get wet and dry out. They do, but only very very slightly, like just a few mm.

Trouble with waxed hats is they don't stay waterproof unless you keep treating them. And a cold wet waxed hat is the most unpleasant thing in the world if you have to put it back on your head wet. People with a decent covering of hair might not have experienced this though.

I know I am repeating myself but we must have gone into every hat department in Stirling and the only sensible waterproof hats were in the men's section.....

But they don't need it often and it's easy to do.  I do my working jacket regularly and it's 16 years old!
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

plus one for tilley hats... the 'outback' is a dry soft wax cotton version and its excellent.
