Why am I so cold?
« on: October 31, 2013, 07:39:30 pm »
It is a bit of a running joke in our family that I am wired wrong re temperature, I am usually cold before anyone else and I hate draughts or air con or anything like that blowing on me.
I know it is autumn but this week it is getting ridiculous. I cannot get warm whatever I do  :(

I have had the heating on and am wearing two three or even four layers in the house at times but I still feel cold. If I am like this now what am I going to do when it gets really cold? is it possible to just be so used to feeling cold that you still feel cold even when you are not? Am I just being a wimp!?

I'm always cold as well. I can't stand drafts etc. I'm also hypothyroid. When my thyroid is not happy it worse, I used to live in flip flops and shorts almost all year round untill my thyroid packed up.

Not sure on the cause but have you tried wearing the hi tech  thin base layers used by climbers, cyclists etc, can't imagine anyone being cold if they layer anything over those, ESP indoors......

As Funkyfish says, having an underactive thyroid gland can cause a feeling of cold. Do you have other symptoms such as dry skin, constipation, gaining weight easily? If so, it might be worth getting a blood test to check it.

Yeah, that's a bit freaky!
All of them on and off. Docs it is then....

Regarding clothing I have a couple of base layer items I have picked up but it makes little difference really. I have been known to sleep in a couple of layers plus a dressing gown, two duvets and an electric blanket. Writing it like that makes me realise how strange I am behaving!
Thanks folks x

I have noticed that thinner people (obviously folk who generally eat less) are more often colder than us more padded specimens.

When I was young and tried to stick to a 1000 cal a day diet and was size 8 I was perpetually cold.  Nowadays I am often too hot.  Of course it might be thyroid, but it also might be I have a higher calorie intake

There was a tv programme where two doctors who were friends at university were doing a lifetime experiment and it seems to be that if you regularly eat less calories than your body feels you need it will go into "slow mode" which means everything runs more slowly, you will probably live longer and age more slowly but because you are in slow mode you will produce less heat and feel the cold much more.

You will now tell me you are size 22  :roflanim:

yes my first thoughts were thyroid. I've been hyper thyroid and hypo  and both seem like your internal thermostat is broken.  You feel cold and although you have lots of clothes on and the fire on you're still cold. Then suddenly the thermostat starts working and you're really hot!   I also find my hair has gone really dry. Blood test will show whats happening :-)

Show that describes it perfectly. I was convinced my new (to me) landrover had heated seats that were switched on and I didn't know where the switch was because I kept going from cold to really hot for no reason.

I am not a size 22 but am far from skinny, I have gained a lot of weight over the last year or so. I am certainly not skinny enough to feel cold because of it . Lol x

Just a note, my middle daughter was always too hot then too cold and yes, she has been found to have Thyroid problems, so do get  yourself tested.  Other symptons she had were :- infections such as a bad throat, pains in the balls of her feet, skin problems and general sleepiness!

I have this too. I am always in loads of jumpers and still cold. Mine is an automomic nervous system problem though which goes with the Ehlers Danlos.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.
