feed for slim goats
« on: September 26, 2013, 12:03:24 pm »
Hello.  I have 15 boer x  of various ages from 5 months up to 5 years.
My trouble is that they are all to skinny. Obviously the dairyness in them some of them are not going to be a really muscular. They have shown a slight improvement recently but I have a long way to go still.
I feed them a course goat mix morning and evening and they have hay and are out on grass.
I see some people are using beef nuts.
Anyone have any suggestions
Thanks mark

Simply,  goat feed be it nuts or mix, does not have the required amount of minerals.  Goats require the same amount of copper, for example, as a cow !!
Feed a good grower pellet/nut allowing approx. 1 - 1.5kg a head until they start to seriously add weight.  Cut it back a bit and see if they maintain condition.
Worm them with an Ivermectin based wormer.............don't use Panacur, it is a waste of money as most worms are totally resistant to it.
If you are in a wet area, it might be wise to check for fluke worm..............this has been a much bigger problem this year, no doubt due to the wet winter & spring.
Make sure they have top class hay ad lib.
DONT feed silage.            use haylage with extreme caution...........it could contain Listeria bacteria,  goats don't generally recover from this disease.

Okay. Thanks for the reply. I have wormed them recently so hopping that cancels worms from the equation.

iv had success with my skinny one.  :excited:
shes on calf rearer nuts mixed half and half with dry sugarbeet pellets, a separate bucket of apple chaff, then haylage, and a separate bucket of fresh veg and a copper lick. plus shes out to graze during the day. they get as much as they want but they arent greedy so might not work for all breeds. shes working expensive to feed but she was very skinny.
(they waste the wet sugarbeet and it goes mouldy to feed adlib so we feed it dry)

I would increase the amount of cereals in her diet. You say you are giving goat mix, but I would always (unless the goat was fat) add some additional cereals. Make sure you get bruised or flaked as whole cereals can go right through them. So I would be adding some oats, wheat or barley to the food, and also either beetpulp or alfalfa as an additional snack.
