Hi .I have two GOS gilts I want to take for slaughter at 8 months. My neighbour farmer told me never take a gilt when shes in season so can someone please tell me if this is correct and if so explain to me what to look out for and what cycle they have on and off because I need to work out the date to book in at slaughter house. thanks
Every 21 days is the normal cycle time and red swollen Vulva with a white mucus discharge, pricked ears to back pressure and standing ridge to the same would be some of the signs of cycling. It would not be ideal to send your gilts at this point, but I have done, but only because when loaded they can't jump all over each other. Depends on your transport.
As you have such small numbers, the gilt on heat will jump all over the other gilt, so stressing her and this case scenario which not be that ideal, so sending them not in heat would be best.
