We  bought some hatching eggs from Poulet Anglais (based in Spilsby, Lincs) - we had to get eggs as we are in NE Scotland, but I think he does sell day olds too.

Hatching rate was good, and the chicks are very healthy & quick growing - think they got to a good weight by 10-12 weeks. His birds are a Hubbard type, and the one we kept had a good flavour, They free ranged over a section of the veg plot that was fallow & a bit grassy & weedy - the chickens loved it. The birds didn't go off their legs (Ross Cobb types may do this). But they did eat a huge amount of food - we fed them growers and mixed corn.

If that is the type of bird you're after, try contacting Simon Skinner at Poulet Anglais.

its the perfect time to buy turkey poults - have you considered them? all the ones we have bought (hybrids) are excellent meat and quick growing.

We bought day olds  in ,we met them in Penrith.  Very healthy chicks and every one growing well.
They are in a section of one of the stables for now as the are still under a heat lamp at night then they will go into one of the other sheds and free range.
They do eat a Hugh amount of food and grow fast

Hi Carl,

Sorry no e-mail - there are these details:

Expect to pay about 50p each for day old chicks. The supplier we have come across is Simon Skinner at Poulet Anglais in Old Bolinbroke in Lincolnshire. Whilst he mainly supplies Hubbard's slow growing strains, JA757, 787, Coloryield and Mastergris, he also has some Ross chicks.

Whilst he supplies chicks by the thousands, he's actually really approachable and often can arrange for a driver to meet you somewhere locally when they are delivering birds. The best arrangement is usually for a few people to club together, otherwise he will soon get fed up of people phoning him up wanting to buy 3 or 4 chickens! His number is: 01790 763066 and his mobile is 07787 533325.
