Meat from 3yr old ram?
« on: September 16, 2013, 08:11:21 pm »
Hi there

I have a Shetland ram that I was going to get vasectomised but the vet told me I left it too late,
he has no papers so either I can try and give him away or I can send him off with the lambs.

Has anyone eaten 3 yr old ram before? or an older Shetland?

Would it be worth just turning him into lamb burgers and mince?

Thanks :)

id keep the carcus separate from the new lambs though as it would need cooking differently.

did the vet say what age is too old? i know they can die after late castration, i think its the shock, didnt realise vasectomy is the same. would burdizzo not work?

The reason why the vet said I left it too late was that he would still be fertile when I wanted to use him

So it was my fault for not booking him in sooner, needs to be at least 2 months before he gets used as a teaser

Definitely, and I would hang him for about 2 weeks if the butcher has the space. Meat should be good - slow cooked, braised rather than roasted and curries...
