Pig fights
« on: September 06, 2013, 10:45:35 am »
Well due to family problems we had to postpone ginger pig's exit so we bought into kune kunes who will also be going for meat.  The issue is that one minute they are all fine and snuggled together and then two of them (ginger pig and another) will be fighting!  There's no injury just a lot of pushing and jaw 'snapping' (a strange noise).  Is this normal?  Shall I separate them?  I know they have to establish their hierarchy but surely a couple of days should be enough?  They are all gilts; GP is a month younger (born feb).  To be honest the good thing to come out of this is that I can't wait for them all to go now!

Sounds pretty normal. They'll settle down eventually.

Just keep an eye on them in case it goes too far. Look out for injuries and treat them quickly to avoid further problems. They should sort themselves out.

There aren't any injuries, just the odd scratch, GP is a bit of a bully actually.  They all snuggle up together in the ark so I'm sure it's not serious.

I put some Sudocrem on the scratches or cuts if they're a bit deep, also on nettle rash. Don't have kids but am well supplied with creams and baby wipes etc - the baby aisle in the supermarket is very useful when you have animals!  :D

Mine still have the old word, both are very vocal any way. Have had the odd scratch on the ear. One is 200kgs the other is about 80kgs. Agree sudo cream is great same with germolene.

Don't tell the lady at the pharmacy counter you are buying any meds for animals as they wont sell it to you! I went to buy some ky jelly and some gloves for when we tried AI and mentioned it was for AI in pigs, she said she could sell the ky over the counter to me. How ridiculous

Yes, we had the same problem with haemorrhoid cream for treating a prolapse in quail, it's because pharmacists aren't allowed to sell medication that isn't licensed for animals. We just went to the next pharmacy and kept quiet about what is was for  :innocent:   ;)
