Dumfries/Cumbria Christmas turkey killing
« on: September 04, 2013, 03:57:14 pm »
I have a friend in the Dumfries area rearing a couple of dozen turkeys for Christmas.

She's killed, plucked and dressed chickens and ducks before but I think she's a bit apprehensive of getting stuck into plucking a good number of large turkeys herself.

So I wondered if any small or larger scale producers in that area are killing turkeys mid december ish where she could take hers along and get them killed and plucked?

I'm quite sure she would get stuck in for the day and lend a hand :)

I've heard of people getting all their turkeys nicked shortly before Christmas, so I'd suggest anyone reply by PM rather than posting in this thread ;)
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Yep but she's never done it before so if she could take them somewhere and do them alongside some experienced people it would be ideal, failing that I think she'll just be attempting one at a time till she gets the hang of it.

I'm sure next year she'll do her own.

I found someone with around 500 turkeys outside Dumfries who might be up for the idea so fingers crossed.

She's not keen on having strangers at her place for the reasons mentioned.
