Hi Julie, the reason people in 'Eire' think you're English is not just your accent. I knew you were English when I first saw your post. Why? Because nobody in Ireland says Eire (while speaking in English). But it doesn't matter a damn. Many of my neighbours are English-born and on one evening in Kinvara there was a great session in the pub and all the musicians were English. The American tourists didn't notice the difference.
We (Mrs Muc and I) often dream of moving to Spain. We say that the first thing to do is to really become fluent in the language but I think it is impossible to fully integrate across a language barrier. There are always little nuances which will make the locals laugh. We have a German neighbour who has lived here for 20 years and still speaks with a very strange mix of accents. And even though our children were born here in the rural west of Ireland, we (Mrs Muc and I) will always be 'blow-ins', coming as we do from the big city of Dublin 150 miles away.
Life is short so for better or worse we are all stuck with our imprinted langauge, warts and all.

I'm Scottish by birth and by choice. Dan is English by birth but chooses to live here - he knows I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being proud of your country, county, town, street, home, family, self - so long as it is a positive thing. In fact a bit more pride wouldn't be a bad thing ie taking a pride in what you do. Knocking other folk / places is pointless and negative.

I'm not a European - hate the EU, which has been foisted on us. Look forward to Scotland going it independently - and I wouldn't have said that a few years ago - if anyone ever bothers to ask us.

So...how far back do we go into our family history to have those certain stereotypical traits! and if a family moves from another country and has a baby somewhere else, is that child going to take on the stereotypical traits of the
country they move to? I can see how, small comunities had their different ways etc, but they get watered down through years of intregration, we all take bits from different cultures, you have only to look at a lot of young people who take the "Black American Hoody" look, walk talk and music, I find it amusing, particularly when I worked in Children's Units and locally born children were talking in patwa!!! ;D ;D

Like chickens and probably other animals, we choose to mix with like and familiar, that does not make us racist, just wanting to reflect our views on others with similar views, and by the look of this forum, if we want a row we choose to wind up others not so similar to us and talk of our differences.......we need differences as otherwise life would be boaring and most of us could trace our ancesters to other countries unless of course we have a weak genetic line and are  ::)"inbreeds"!!!!!!

Hiya Muc
No No - Dubbers are not Blow ins - surely youre not a weed, dragged in by the wind -
you are an Irish Man

Some people   ::) ::);D ;D ;D

From one weed to another -
youre welcome at my home anytime -

What do I say then - use Eire as its a lovely word and short, plus someone once told me that translated it means island of pigs ??!!?? ??? ???

Will I use Republic of Ireland, just Ireland or Southern Ireland ???

Don't want people to think I am English - prefer to be
"mongrel"  "blow in" or  "mad woman" anyday   ;D ;D ;D

Apart from dogs, I actually prefer mongrels - I have mongrel hens, ducks, cats, I am too, but NOT my doggie woggies!

Born on the continent, I culturally do feel definitely as a European . Nothing to do with politics, most of what comes out of Brussels is nonsense - for all the different countries! Some idiots tried to create something like the US artificially here, without the countries having a strong bond like in the States ( so it could never work, but nobody asked the population of Europe). Having gone that far now, though, (imposed or not), the Euro in all countries would improve a  lot of things....I love Scotland and do care a lot about local issues, otherwise I wouldn't be here!  :&>

Hiya northfifeduck

The english do not want euro one reason is because they do not want to lose the queens currency ::) ::)

IF ONLY the Welsh and Scottish would go euro and surround them with the stuff,
we might get them to give in ;D ;D ;D

Ah, but they don't take our 'scottish' money down south. (Unless this has changed recently)  ;)

I'm pretty sure the Eurobank would print a pic of HM onto the coins,  ;D every country has some sort of special features on their money - same difference  ;D

I can't see us ever joining the Euro. I can see it makes sense for 1 currency, but no thanks!

I am Treasurer for a National dog club and I have to go cap in hand to the Bank to get English notes for the prizes - even people getting our notes for nothing don't want them  ;) ;D ;D ;D
