Over here everyone who speaks English is English, be they Welsh, Scot or American.  A dutch gentleman who spoke to my OH in English recently was renationalised as English by OH Breton colleagues.    I want to be European

Hello Hillary - I can understand that feeling...

People here in Eire always assume I am English because of my accent - I cannot do the Irish accent - the scottish one comes naturally, but I tend to be stuck with the Yorkshire slant when I speak.

More than being European though -
When people say where are you from I would love to reply   "Oh my god were from the same place - Planet Earth - we are both the same - Humans - We both cry the same, 'We both laugh the same, we both bleed -
lets get on and stop looking for differences to judge people on"  But the people that usually ask these questions are looking for a difference to latch on to.

Problem is - most people want to argue, fight, be judgemental and put everyone into little pigeon holes labelled by religion, sex, age, where your from, what you have done or not done, which school you went to, what you wear, how you speak, and so on - sure you know the picture

I believe the following is quite true..

Judge lest ye be judged - Fix your own self and look deeply - you won't have time to judge others, you will want them to be your friends because you will find honesty, humbleness, forgiveness, humility and best of all TRUE LOVE

And there was me thinking that England was being taken over by Scots! They are in high powere positions in parliament, they are on T.v and radio and lots of journalists are scots. Perhaps if they feel the need to come here then it's not so wonderful in scotland!

It is perfectly wonderful here, Sheila, it's just that we Scots always need to appropriate things - and Englandshire is our next 'Wee County' ;D ;D ;D

oops I think you may have upset a few of our regulars with that second paragraph there AengusOg!

Plus the first corner shop I ever went into in Edinburgh was ran by a very scottish speaking indian man!!! and that was over 20 years ago - he definately was not english ;D ;D ;D

Anyhow I think the scots and the irish are the same peoples - my maiden name was Kilbride, and most of my relatives are from Southern Ireland but I can copy the scottish accent perfectly and feel just as much at home there as I do here - even though I was born in England.

Best to be British me thinks ;D ;D ;D Julie x

Actually, the Asian communities in Scotland have a sense of community and integration which is, sadly, lacking in many of our other immigrants. They (the Asians) have little desire to change everything (when was the last time you saw a cow in the road in Glasgow ;)), and they are generally friendly, and tolerant of our quaint Scottish ways.

You are, of course, correct when you point out the similarities between the Irish and the Scots. The main difference is that the Irish fought long and hard, and will do so again, to resist English rule, whilst the Scots just seem to accept it being done by the back door.

It's actually laughable when the Arbroath people get all animated on the subject of the Declaration of Arbroath, getting dressed up to mark the anniversary of the famous rag......you know, the one which declares to all and sundry, and the pope of the time, that "as long as one hundred of us remain alive, we will never succumb to English rule"...................Arbroath must be the only place in the country where it's believed that we don't still live under the dark cloud which is England, despite having a re-emergence of our own Parliament after 300yrs of servility.

I've no doubt that the English would love the Scots to forget all about the 1000 years of oppression, and our fight for a basic freedom to live our lives, within the confines of our tiny plot of land, without being constantly invaded  by our covetous and base neighbours.

Strangely enough, the English who still live in England are beginning to realise what it may mean to lose their national identity, even if they missed the fact that they had one in the first place ;D, and are now beginning to think that they may, perhaps, wish to keep a little bit of good old Blighty for themselves, as they see it being slowly taken away from them by incomers. Maybe the intensifying English sense of nationality will be the saving of Scotland by some perverse quirk of fate.

The French have the rights of it, I think, when they refuse to employ non-indigenous persons.

I don't want to be British................not when I see how the English, under the umbrella of 'Brits', behave in other peoples' countries.  :o::)

Shades of being tarred with the same brush, I fear. ;)

I should've laid money that someone would say that. I hear it a lot.

What happens in Englandshire is for the Englanders to decide............not really a problem which gives me much grief. ;)

Not read all the posts but surely the world is so small and we all can and will move around for various reasons, so why dose that make any one bad, or become a target of prejudice.
If you are wanting to change your way of life, have better oppertunites, are fleeing violence or  prejudice, how can that make you bad?
And why if you are born in any country, do people think you have certain traits that are not as good as them?
It is a brave decision to leave the place of your birth especially when you move into another country where many people do not make you welcome. My only gripe is people not contributing to the economy and claiming benefits, whether they come from the country they are claiming benefits from or from another country.
With regard to ruling a country, a true politition, voted for by the public, should do whatever benifits the country, simple, they either do or don't.
I judge people on how they are to me, not where they come from. Horrid people come from the earth, thats where I come from too!!!!!!!
HATE PREDJUDICE.......and excuse me if this does not make sense, I am really itchy due to being out clearing the garden and cleaning the pond...little bugs should bug off to another country  ;D ;D ;D ;D

This thread makes really entertaining reading  :D

I can't really add too much, being that i'm pure bred Scottish & my partner is English/Maltese.

There's loads of banter within the house & she's even started to read up on Scots history as she was schooled in England... just to get both sides of the story, which isn't a bad thing.

This thread could have easily broken out into WW3, but has remained friendly throughout.

To answer the origional question, no, we're not all stupid, just some of us are a wee bit thoughtless at times... thankfully it's just a select few.

I think we should go with the term already posted and decide that we're all a bit mongrel then no one could claim to be anything in particular.
