Couldn't afford it but had no idea what to make of the meagre ingredients we had available for a meal tonight and it's been a long day looking at sheep arses (as you do-if you keep sheep that is!) soooo I went out and bought fish and chips. Smelt GORGEOUS on the drive home. Taste buds were very excited. It was so disappointing, soggy flacid chips and greasy haddock for £9.50. Thinking what I could have spent that on instead now    Bugger it. Don't you just hate it when that happens. Good job I bought yummy chocolate for afters.

Did they put the boxes into a carrier bag? I hate it when they do that, I swear it makes it soggy.

Why is it they never taste as good as they smell! I'm sure there are air fresheners at the doorway to entice you in with the fake smells.
Chocolate sounds a much better idea. It'll take the horrid chippy taste away too

we have a bakers in our village like that. always smells lovely but tastes really bad. quite lucky really or id get fatter being so close - tho the stovies are good and were the only thing i could eat when i had morning sickness 
i must admit to never having a bad chipper since we moved here. mind you its not the cheap dinner it once was.

Fish and chips just don't taste the same if you don't eat them as soon as they are made, if I go to collect ours to take home I never put them in a bag and will crack the box lids open slightly so they don't steam and get soggy. Means I have to drive like a bat out of hell to get them home while they are still hot

The only decent fish and chips are the ones you get from the sea side in a bag and eat watching the sea!!.
I know what you mean about a disappointing treat, that happens to me all the time.......

yep, need eaten immediately or they go soggy, especially if you are unfortunate enough to be served polystyrene boxes which hold all the condensation 

I no longer bring chips home, always eat in the car or within a few minutes walk or drive of the shop.  Very very rare I even buy them now, but there's no point buying a treat that isn't one when you unwrap it     On the positive side a bad experience puts you off the shop and/or the habit, so it helps the healthy eating and better spending behaviours

We had wonderful haddock and chips last night from "Marco's" on the harbourside at Arbroath. Properly wrapped in paper, we sat by the harbour and ate them - delicious! £6.30 for a fish supper here

I had a proper fish supper a few years ago in Aberdour.......now that was lovely, grease down my chin and everything

I had fish and chips from Annan chippie on Wednesday and absolutely delicious it was too.  Crunchy batter, I ate every crumb - usually I pick the fish out of the soggy stuff but this was beautiful inside and out 

Must be something about the Solway coast - my other favourite chippie is in Gretna : excellent haggis 

Anyone up near Ardrossan know if Albert's is still as good as it ever was?  We used to drive out from Glasgow for that treat 

And lest anyone think that all the best chippies are in Scotland... many many many moons ago, the chippie at the end of the beach in Criccieth served the best fresh fish in the world.  I wonder if it's still the same?

I can't afford fish and chips anymore , but even when i could i always had saveloy or sausage if they didn't have them , i am not a fish lover .
I only have f+c  (saveloy and chips ) , when my aunt is down to stay , and always eat them overlooking the harbour at NewQuay or Aberaeron
, piping hot (eat the little ones first) , have a wander round then have a 99 icecream , heart attack food ! , but it is only  once a year , clear , buzzzz , trying 300 , clear , buzzzz , trying 350 , clear , buzzzz !

Once a  year is certainly a treat so even worse if its not good......I bought some lovely fish and did it myself but was also disappointed, I have been told I need to leave the fish in salt overnight before battering it to death the next day!!

Lol , why would leaving it in salt overnight do anything ? The fish lived in salt water ?
