Hello.
I'm just looking at the sheep movement document.
Some of my sheep are due to move in a week or so and they are going on a 3 hour journey up the road.
Do I need to get a permit number?
It says so if they're going more than 40 miles but people seem to think its not necessary.
I've only sold at auction before I didn't have a permit (no idea where they were going) and on sheep we received in 2010 it was just left blank.

As far as I'm aware your need to complete a sheep movement form-

You can either print it out (4 times, because there should be a white yellow blue and pink copy) or get it from your local trading standards office. Not sure what other paperwork you need though, another member might be more well informed about travelling sheep long distance (we only go from the farm they come from to ours, and from ours to the abbatoir)

I think it depends on whether you are receiving a financial gain, i.e. this is your business.  If its a hobby then it is not required (I believe).


And it's not just a matter of getting a permit number, you would need a certificate of competence for the given type of livestock you are transporting, this means taking a course.


If in doubt ring your local animal health department / trading standards, and they will tell you all you need to know.

You will need to fill in an AML (Animal Movement Licence) whic is simple you will have to note the holding they are leaving and the holding they are going to ie by their respective CPH numbers. If they are going tro market then the market will have its own CPH number. Being sheep or goats you must list each one ie by their tag numbers. This is to be able to keep track of individual movements.

You do not need a cert of competence if you are moving your own animals however you must still observe all the necessary requirements as to water and feed, check re the distance they are travailing and the time they will spend in their stock trailer.. Cert of competence is require if you are being paid to move the animals or it is your occupation.

YOU MUST IF MOVING LIVESTOCK FROM ONE HOLDING TO ANOTHER COMPLETE AN AML.

I would say it was worth doing the certificate of competance, it is not hard and quite interesting, the questions are all multiple choice.
