What aerosol wasp nest killer do you use
« on: August 14, 2013, 08:40:50 am »
A barn we rent has two wasp nests in it. Both reachable but one is in a weatherboarded cavity, the other appears to be behind a door frame.

I usually use B&Q's own brand but bought two aerosols last week and despite good treatment, it seems pretty ineffective. The foam seems thin and just runs all over the place and the wasps are not deterred for long.

Has this stuff been dumbed down. What's anyone using over the counter?

I don't use anything, but even for those who do I wouldn't think it would be worth the effort this late.   The wasps are just about at the end of their season so are dying off now.  They do so much good around the place that I put up with the occasional unpleasant encounter.  I do have a wasp crusher (a long handled kitchen spoon) for use if they come into the house and make the mistake of crawling up the window.

That's fair enough - I too am a live and let live guy but when you're trying to move bales around in a barn and using local (generally young) labour and people are getting stung often then it makes sense to try and eradicate the problem.

Although it's a pain I usually have no problem with wasps when we're eating outside or sitting in the garden at the pub because if you ignore them and sometimes, for some people, that can be difficult not to go into 'windmill' mode, they will not harm you. But when you're working and annoying them to the extent that they're defending 'their' territory then I'm afraid for the good of our livelihood then the problem must be dealt with if possible.

Oh yes, shake for half a minute at least. it is different stuff, down here anyway - different tin, markings etc with no hint on the 'ingredients' as to what's in there.

Thinking of getting a 'Rentokil' aerosol?  :fc:

I had a small nest in the grandkids Wendy house.  All I had was flea spray - I emptied the tin on it and shut the door, then went back two hours later and hosed the whole thing to bits.  Not seen a wasp since. :innocent:

Probably stupid response but have you contacted the local pest control. We went through the local council ( but he wasps were nesting,in our roof  :-\ ) they sorted it free of charge after spraying a powder. Wasps went in the roof then darted out as quickly as they could never to be seen again.

It's not a stupid response at all - but the local council don't have that sort of service any more. They can 'administrate' it for you but all they do is pass your details on to a local firm.

Our B&Q stuff is now called 'Diall' in a mainly light blue can with some white. Was yours the same stuff?

We had an inaccessable nest and were told to use nippon ant powder on the landing strip. Most were dead the next morning, we had already tried the foam twice and nothing happened. The foam did kill an easy target in the shed. Good luck, I like to live and let live but sometimes you can't.

We've got one in the shed. It will get the same as the last- pipe freezer. Chills them to -15 at which point they cease to function and go into a shutdown. Then I cut the nest off with a large knife into a plastic bag and seal it. Into the bin it goes.
