I keep 9 hens and one cock. The girls are really quiet and making a lovely cooing sound which you can only hear when your stood right near them. The males do crow, mine crow's once or twice a day.
However, when we have raised chicks, we keep them outdoors once they are fully feathered and they are quite close to the main flock and once the male chicks reach maturity we have found they start crowing in the middle of the night, usually around 3am and crow for hours straight, we have had to come down stairs in the middle of the night and cull them there and then! We live in a housing estate so cannot let them keep crowing like that.
The crow isnt unpleasant and no way near as intrusive as a cockerel but if your worried about noise and don't intend to breed I would suggest not having a male.
