Never too old
« on: July 10, 2013, 09:20:10 pm »
Really pleased with myself tonight, at 61 I have just ridden for the first time in years. Been looking longingly at daughters 17.1 hh horse in the field for ages now and as it was such a lovely night decided just to go for it, fastening the girth took the longest, had to get the steps out (I'm only 5ft1in) and mounting involved climbing on the garden wall. Had a lovely ride though and even managed a couple of short trots, just not sure if I'll be able to walk tomorrow. ::)

To inspire you further my neighbour does 75km in a day endurance rides and he's pretty much the same age as yourself....so onwards from here! (tho 17+ hands is pretty impressive for a return to riding after a break, I must say! )  :-J

It's not the height, it's the width that's the killer next day  ;D

Well done you; maybe I should get my saddle out  :)

Well done DM , sorry to hear about the sore wotsit ! I know that sit down feeling .
I can't ride my horses due to my back , broke it in car smash and now have buggered vertebrae .
I used to get the sore bit , no need to mention exact  bit ! , but it was my hips that caused terrible pain . Pain in hip joint due to broken pelvis in car smash and unbelievable cramp in hip muscles .
Perhapse i should try side saddle ?

It's best to get back up on the horse as soon as possible to allow your body to adjust to being assaulted in places no one wants to mention. :-J
I love to ride and haven't for about 20 years, just need a horse or someone local to let me borrow theirs. ;D

Sort of local Kaz , but mine haven't been ridden in a long time , they may say "NO" lol . All depends how brave you are and do you still bounce when you come off ? I go thud !

Didn't get back on today but perhaps tomorrow  :D  know that I won't bounce if I fall off but he is a real sweetie
Even his spooks are very gentle, mind you he didn't used to be like that I wouldn't have gotten on his back a few years ago, and yes Rosemary the width is the killer, he is 1/4 shire.

I think I need one bomb proof and a plodder because as I fall I'll go splot. I think my ideal horse would be what I call the gypsy ones.

My bigun , Josie , is clydesdale x cob , although her gt gt gt  granddad was Dutch Courage , Jennie Lorriston-Clarke's 70's gold medal event winner  .
The horses on the farm here are coloured cobs (gypsy type) , mainly now , but they are nigh on wild and would likely kill you !

I don't fancy being killed, I think I'll walk. ;D I love Clydesdales but I always wanted a Suffolk Punch.
