we have found that its cheaper to buy wood from the private estates rather than the FC.

A chap who stayed with us a few years ago had a  brother who bought all the kit etc to collect "free wood" in the long run it WAS cheaper to buy it, although we love the collecting bit and cutting bit and we have now covered our costs as we also use the time we would be taking the dogs for walks.  I am glad there are no chain saws but I did suggest my husband hires some more functional stuff at the end of the season.  Currently we have loads and loads of very good and dry wood, a lot of kindling too and its mixed hard and soft wood

See if there is anyone in your area with a wood processor to help you out. Have a look on the net for your local machinery ring.

I will let Happy come back to you about their system but here in scotland the fc have typically 2 permits, one is pick up ie the trash left from clear felling and road side collection is from the piles left over from the log lorrys going to the paper mills etc. If you go to your nearest fc office they will be able to tell where the wood is and the cost i think its about £20 for 6 months for pick up. Hope that helps.
