A local nursery has asked me to bring a few piglets along to their open day, where the children can see real animals, as well as the good ol' 'Guess the name of the pig Competition!'.

I wondered whether it is OK to take the piglets there without having to fill in the forms, as they will be going with me in the morning and coming home in the afternoon.

If anybody has any experience or information which would be useful, please feel free to share!

I'd imagine it's something along the lines of the rules for taking animals to shows or sales - they can go and come back the same day, but it triggers the standstill again on your holding. I don't know exactly how to apply or who to ask, try environmental health, or have a mooch around on the eaml form?

What a lovely thing to be asked to do, got some new weaners this afternoon and they are just darlings, kids would love them! Hopefully you'll be able to do it without too much hassle, but how feasible would it be for them to visit you one day in future?

Great! Just wanted to check before I suddenly had a letter through the door saying I'd broken all these rules!! I am going to talk to the manager at the nursery on the open day to talk about coming to the farm to see the calves, lambs, chicks and piglets! I'm sure it will happen soon!

We do this on a regular basis and according to TS (who did animal moves) it is known as i quote their words "Going for a ride out". We take the piglets in a small trailer, we drop the back gate onto a small bale and put a hurdle across and cover the gate with straw so the piglets can wander about, the kids can see them and as the piglets never leave the trailer they in theory don't do a movement.

The pics are two fatteners we took to a farm who didn't have pigs for Open Farm Sunday and we also took 7 weaners to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr Harrogate for a smallholders day.

These types of moves are rarely of interest to the authorities, but you ought to just cover yourself, as there are legal provisions here, and if the local TS officer has had a bad day...
 
So as long as the location you're moving to isn't an existing holding with livestock, and that  other livestock isn't visiting the site on the same day (making it a livestock show), then Defra's guidance to local authorities covers this

Page 6 states
 Performing animals . Animal Health may issue permits disapplying the movement standstill (either 6 or 20 days) to allow the movement of performing animals provided certain conditions are met. These permits can only be used to move, sheep, goats, pigs and cattle (NOT DEER). Permits may only be issued in circumstances where the movement is short and temporary to an exhibition, parade or live animal act on a stage or film set that takes place at a non-agricultural premises which does not have a CPH number. See chapter 62 in Animal Health Operations Manual for further details.
 
However most times if you phone them, they'll just tell you that you don't need to do anything.
If other livestock is going, then they could ask that the location gets a temporary CPH (unlikely but does  happen)
 
However phone call will sort it - clearly Mandy has a nice TS officer , and suggesting what she does to yours might make it easier!
