After the last horrible experience of getting 2 colts gelded with my vets I have been in a panic of what to do. Toto will need to be gelded this September. I asked friends and no one could recommend a good equine vet in my area. This morning I phoned the equine hospital at Kingswells near Aberdeen and they will do the job for me. All I have to do is inform my vets that Toto will be going there for his operation. May cost more but at least I will know that it will be done in a proper clean area with people who know what they are doing. Would have had him done in the Spring but it was just to cold and wet, now we have the flies.

That sounds like an inspired idea and much more reassuring for you, good thinking. Not cheap but if he can come home same day it shouldn't be so bad, it's the gold leaf shavings charges etc that are the killer if they stay in.

Hope it all goes well

Shame you've had such a bad experience that you have to opt for the higher expense of hospitalisation.  I've been so lucky with my vets, both practices I've used in the last 15 years or so have been superb at standing castrations at home, minimal fuss, no stress for me or the colts, and no hassle from the practices either.

I have only had to send older ones or ones with issues to the Dick Vet for surgery, 2 welshie rescues a few years back that were late descending (1 each just out of reach inside by 18 months) and even had a 7 year old stallion and 2year old colts done at home in the past, tho I pray I never have to go through that with my now 12yo homebred stallion as that would be scary at his age.
