Alderney airport under heavy guard!
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:08:53 am »
My wife and I have been on holiday this week on the island of Alderney, we fly back home tomorrow. We landed on a grass runway last Friday and straight away, we felt immediately at home. The island airport is surrounded by pigs, OSB's to be exact. The set up that the farmer is using is superb. Big wire netting enclosures with lots of grass, loads of comfortable arks and most importantly, the pigs are on sandy free draining soil.
Here are some pictures of the OSB pigs.
 There are rather a lot.

and finally, here's one of the  famous Alderney black rabbist. The island is full of them.

I'll be coming back with lots of ideas to put in place with ourown  pig keeping. Those OSB's looked to have a lot in common with the Gloucester Old Spots that we've started to keep again recently.

Today we met a really nice lady called Tanya. She's the only other keeper of pigs on the island of Alderney. Her pigs are Iron age with just smidging of Saddleback in them. Once again, they were kept in idyllic conditions.

I would have said that they looked more likely to have Berkshire in them than Saddleback.
Everyone makes mistakes as the Dalek said climbing off the dustbin.

You can't be right all the time. :roflanim: Actually we suggested  a bit of Berkshire being in them but its definately saddleback.
