Today, Niamh, my 8 week old Great Niece went for her first 2 injections from the Dr. Before jabbing the baby the Dr explained what would happen and side effects etc. It was explained that sometimes the injection can cause a little swelling, however, if it appears and is bigger than a 10p piece they must phone NHS 24 immediately.
When she got the jag she screamed the place down but after a few minutes she settled down. Once at home she became very restless and would not settle. Then, on her thigh they saw a very large swelling - much larger than the 10p size the Dr warned them about. They immediately phoned NHS 24 as told by the GP this afternoon. That was about 6.30pm tonight and they were asked for all the details and told that a Nurse or Dr would call them back. Well, up until an hour ago they still had received no phone call. What a scandalous system this is!
Luckily Niamh's other Gran is a Dr at Ninewells and although she runs the midwifery department she has enough knowledge to advise them what to do. They did as she said and eventually the wee one calmed down and the swelling has started reducing in size. I can't believe that any organisation would take such chances with a youngsters health and not offer advice/support or guidance to first time parents. You read all these horror stories about kids reacting to injections and the NHS for whatever reason did not support this young family.
